Sonics Founder & CEO, Robert Soloff, Elected to CT Academy of Science and Engineering

March 7th, 2011

(February 25, 2011 – Newtown, CT) Robert Soloff, the founder and CEO of Sonics & Materials, Inc. has been elected a Member of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering by its membership.

In its announcement of the 2011 New Members, the Academy noted that Mr. Soloff was awarded the patent for the ultrasonic welding of rigid thermoplastic parts in 1965, one of the most important plastics joining technologies in the plastics industry. He also built the first ever ultrasonic welding press, and founded Sonics & Materials, Inc. in 1969, a company that today continues to lead the world in the development of ultrasonic technologies.

The Academy was established in 1976 by Special Act of the Connecticut General Assembly. The Academy’s main objectives are to provide information and advice on science and technology to the government, industry and people of Connecticut and to encourage youth interest in science, engineering, and technology.

Membership in the Academy is honorific in nature and limited to 400 persons in accordance with the Academy’s Bylaws. Induction will take place at the 36th Annual Meeting and Dinner held on May 25, 2011.

An original pioneer in the field of ultrasonics, Mr. Soloff continues to innovate and has been awarded an additional 11 patents for ultrasonic technologies in the areas of plastics assembly and liquid processing. Sonics & Materials, Inc. has expanded over the course of 40+ years and manufactures complete lines of ultrasonic welding equipment for plastics and metal bonding, as well as ultrasonic liquid processing equipment for the biotechnology industry.

Mr. Soloff’s company and his discovery of ultrasonic plastics welding were featured on the television show “Modern Marvels” in 2007. He has also been a director of the Ultrasonic Industry Association and a contributor to many industry journals and publications.
